Membership commitment
Membership in the Association for Understanding of Mathematics is public. Members make the following general commitments as a part of joining the Association for Understanding of Mathematics, with the understanding that they will make their collaborators aware of these commitments.
1. Members commit to oppose the stance of anti-AI people. In particular, members try to avoid working with anti-AI people as much as possible.
In this context, anti-AI people does not mean people who do not wish to use AI, but rather people who actively ask others to avoid using AI and people who actively try to stop AI companies from doing operations within their freedom.
In particular, people who wish to avoid AI (without trying to coerce others to avoid) is welcome to join us.
2. Members commit to decouple the two streams of mathematical advancements (while supporting both): one that creates new knowledge at the frontier, and one that creates human understanding.
Both can coexist. Both can be supported.
Members also have the option of signing onto the following public commitment and joining our Math 2.1 caucus. We stand by our comrades who choose to value understanding of mathematics above everything else. In doing so, we affirm the inherent value of understanding mathematics as a human pursuit.
3. Members of the Math 2.1 caucus put priority in understanding mathematics more than their job stability and life. Members of this caucus engage in core mathematical activities, such as supporting other humans in their attempts to understand mathematics, trying to find and understand proofs (regardless of being AI-generated or not), with or without using AI tools.
Most importantly, even if without money, fame, and recognition, even if the public funding is cut, even if AI becomes superintelligent at finding proofs, posing research questions, and performing expositions, members of this caucus will still commit to work towards understanding mathematics, whether such activities becomes "refining proofs coming from AI",
"listening to explanation coming from AI", "orchestrating AI research swarm", or even when the AI becomes better at doing everything by itself, members will still commit to sit back and try to understand what they don't understand yet, without trying to race against AI, without trying to stop AI, and without trying to preserve the old economics of mathematical work.
